Massimo Iosa Ghini was born in 1959 and he studied architecture in Florence, graduating from Polytechnic Institute in Milan. Since 1985, he has been part of the avant-garde movement in Italian design, creating illustrations, objects and ambiences for the bolidism group, which he founded. He was also called on by Ettore Sottsass for the Memphis group. During this period, he opened the Iosa Ghini Studio, starting to work as an architect and designer. Iosa Ghini designs furniture, collections and objects, and develops art direction for leading Italian and foreign design firms such as Yamagiwa Lighting in Japan, Silhouette Modellbrillen in Austria, Zumtobel Staff, Duravit, Dornbracht and Hoesch in Germany, Roche Bobois International in France and Cinova, Moroso, Poltrona Frau, Cassina, Flou, Snaidero, Assopiastrelle in Italy, and he has defined a highly recognisable and personal style over the years. His professional growth as an architect has developed through his work in planning architectural and exhibit areas, creating cultural and commercial installations, and designing retail chains around the world. He has held conferences and lectures at a number of universities, including the Polytechnic Institute of Milan, the Domus Academy, the University of Rome, the Elisava School in Barcelona, the Design Fachhoschule in Cologne, and the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna. He has also represented Italian design at various international symposium. His works can be found in various international museums and private collections. His projects have received the Good Design Award 2001 and 2004 by the Chicago Atheneum, and the Red Dot Award 2003.
Iosa Ghini Associates
The Iosa Ghini Associati has offices in Bologna, in an old fourteenth-century palazzo, and in Milan, and it has a staff of about thirty people. Since 1986 it has worked in the field of design and architecture with the goal of supplying its international experience to a select group of customers, handling projects involving not only the aesthetic aspects traditionally associated with design, but also developing the entire creation process, including marketing surveys, underlying design concepts, technical development, engineering, prototyping, design, corporate image. Over the years, it has gained extensive experience in developing projects for major commercial groups, such as Ferrari, Maserati, Renault, Poste Italiane, Italian telephone companies and banks, for which it has defined the interior design identity for world-wide application to all offices, affiliates and points of sale.Among its architectural projects is the work done in Miami (USA) to design a covered plaza surrounded by commercial space, developing the theme of a mall for elite cars. The studio was also commissioned by Ustra to design the main underground station of Hannover, opened for Expo 2000. Recently Iosa Ghini Associates is also following the design of several hotels, like the New York Palace in Budapest, the Atlantic Hotel in Nice, and also following the concept and design of all airport areas and VIP lounges for Alitalia.In progress, a new building in Budapest for the Boscolo Group Hotels, architecture for private companies such as W.P. Lavori in Corso spa.In the last years the Firm has been invited to many restricted competitions; among them the competion for convention area for the international mechanical company G.D., Italy, the competition for the Maserati Museum and Enzo Ferrari’s House, the competition for the Museum of the Town of Bologna, and the competition for the new area in Rome called Campidoglio Due.
