Carmen Fiol-Costa was born in Barcelona. She graduated in architecture from ETSAB in 1981. Generalitat de Cataluña Grant in 1985-87 and William King Fellowship 1986-87, she obtained a Master of Science in Architecture and Building Design from Columbia University in New York in 1986. She has been a student of Oriol Bohigas, Manuel de Solà-Morales and Peter Eisenmann. From 1981-1988 she was a leading architect in the department de Project Urbans de L’Ajuntament de Barcelona, whose public spaces between 1981 and 1987 were awarded the Harvard University Prince of Wales in 1990. From 1993-2002 she was professor in the Department d’ Urbanisme I Ordenació del Territori at ETSAB; in 1997 she was a member of the jury of the “Concourse Imperatrice” Foundation Roi Baudouin à Bruxelles and professor at ILAUD (International Laboratory of Architecture and Urban Design), Venecia 1998. Since 2003 she´s a visiting professor at the Scuola di Architettura dell´Univerità degli Studi di Cagliari. Doctor Europeus at the Universitat Politècnica de Cataluña.
Carmen Fiol and Andreu Arriola began their joint professional practice in 1982, which received early recognition with the award of joint First Prize for the Parc de la Villette Competition, Paris 1982. Since then, the practice has undertaken projects ranging from architecture and urban design to interior and industrial design.
ARRIOLA & FIOL, architects, was founded in 1987 with the principal objectives of exploring the interrelationship between Architecture, Infrastructure and Landscape. The ambition was that of closing the traditional gap between these disciplines. This is achieved by means of designing Urbanism based on specific projects and planning Architecture in the public sector.
